At Mullion Primary School we believe that the learning of a foreign language provides a valuable educational, social and cultural experience for pupils. To teach the children the importance of being good citizens and prepare them for life outside of Cornwall, we intend to inspire pupils to develop a love of languages and to expand their horizons to other countries, cultures and people.
We aim to help children develop a love for learning, grow into curious, confident and reflective language learners and to provide them with a foundation that will equip them for further language studies. As French is the language by our main partner secondary school, we aim to provide an introduction to the culture of French-speaking countries and communities.
Through the acquisition of learning behaviours for success pupils develop communication and literacy skills that lay the foundation for future language learning. Learning another language raises awareness of our multi-lingual and multi-cultural world, and introduces an international dimension to pupil’s learning. The learning of a foreign language provides a medium for cross-curricular links and for reinforcement of knowledge, skills and understanding developed in other subjects. Throughout our units, lovely stories and songs support language acquisition and help develop every child as a reader.
