Reading Fluency and Comprehension
In September 2023, we carried out a Reading Review to evaluate our current approach to the teaching of reading. The review and rationale can be read in detail below.
Reading fluency and comprehension strategies are taught through the the VIPERS domains. This takes place for all children from completion of the Read Write Inc phonics programme.
Reading Strategies
Our Reading Spine
Our Reading Spine ensures that all children are read to daily and are guided towards a range of genres and authors. It also provides a platform to explore series of books or collections by an author. These books are then made available in class and the school library. Children are also read short stories that have become through early years and key stage one.
Book Talk
Each week, the children also have a 'Book Talk' session where they discuss characters, settings, events, theories and queries about their class book. This helps to develop their ability to talk about their own reading choices and think about aspects they particularly enjoy.
Non-fiction books are woven through Science, Geography, History, RE, Art and Design.
